Case Study / Case Study 01

Reclaiming Personal Boundaries

01

Profile

An adult professional who was accustomed to caring for others and placing their needs first.

02

Starting Point

The client frequently agreed to requests even when feeling exhausted or uncomfortable. Saying no created guilt, while remaining silent created frustration.

Over time, this pattern affected family relationships, energy and self-confidence. The client understood intellectually that boundaries were necessary but found it difficult to recognise and communicate them in real situations.

Starting Point
03

Coaching Objective

1

To identify personal needs
and limits

2

Understand why setting
boundaries felt threatening

3

Develop
a clearer

4

More respectful way of
expressing them.

Approach Background
04

Approach

The process combined reflective coaching questions with practical observation of specific situations.

The client explored:

  • The moments in which they automatically said yes
  • The thoughts and fears connected to disappointing others
  • The difference between responsibility and over-responsibility
  • Physical and emotional signals that indicated a limit
  • Language for expressing a need without aggression or apology
  • Small situations in which a new response could be tested safely
05

Development During
the Process

Rather than beginning with a major confrontation, the client identified smaller opportunities to practise.

The work focused on replacing an automatic response with a short pause:

  1. 1. What am I feeling?
  2. 2. What do I need?
  3. 3. What am I realistically able to offer?
  4. 4. What answer would respect both the other person and myself?
Development During the Process

The client gradually developed a clearer understanding that a boundary was not a rejection of another person. It was information about what was possible and sustainable.

Representative Shift
06

Representative Shift

The client began to express needs earlier instead of waiting until frustration became overwhelming. They practised giving shorter, clearer answers and recognised that discomfort did not automatically mean they had made the wrong decision.

Key Learning
07

Key Learning

A respectful boundary can protect a relationship more effectively than silent resentment or reluctant agreement.
